For many people considering a change of pace, Guernsey offers a unique combination of lifestyle, security, and tax benefits.
As one of the Channel Islands, Guernsey combines beautiful coastlines and a strong sense of community with good connectivity to the mainland and a stable and attractive tax regime. It is therefore unsurprising that the island remains a popular destination for entrepreneurs, senior executives, retirees, and families alike.

Guernsey offers a lifestyle that is often difficult to replicate in larger jurisdictions. Residents enjoy:
Housing Markets
Guernsey has a two-tiered housing market coined “Local Market” and “Open Market”.
The Local Market is for those with close familial connections to the island or those who will be working in the island and are holders of Guernsey Employment Permits. These permits can only be applied for by Guernsey employers.
The Open Market is available to British or Irish passport holders or others with the right to remain in the UK. Such individuals will be able to purchase or rent a subset of properties and have the ability to work in Guernsey as much or as little as they wish.
Tax Environment
For those moving to Guernsey, they can expect to benefit from its simple and competitive tax regime.
Individuals are subject to income tax at a flat rate of 20%, rather than the progressive rates that can apply in other jurisdictions. In addition to this, Guernsey does not levy Capital Gains or Inheritance Taxes.
Guernsey offers a number of income tax caps that limit an individual's annual tax liability where certain conditions are met. These include a tax cap for individuals with only non-Guernsey sourced income, a separate tax cap for those with a combination of Guernsey-sourced and non-Guernsey sourced income and a tax cap for new arrivers to the island who are purchasing Open Market property.
The maximum tax liability for those with non-Guernsey sourced income only is £160,000. For those with both Guernsey and non-Guernsey sourced income, the maximum tax liability they will pay is £320,000.
The new arrivals maximum tax liability is £60,000 for the first 4 years of residence
Please note that these figures are applicable for the 2026 tax year and may be subject to future increases.

Early planning is critical. The tax implications of leaving the UK can be just as important as the benefits available after arrival in Guernsey. Residence status, UK departure planning, business interests, pensions and family circumstances all need careful consideration before relocating.
While the tax advantages are frequently highlighted, many individuals who relocate to Guernsey stay because of the quality of life. The combination of financial stability, community spirit, excellent amenities, and access to nature creates an environment that appeals to families, professionals, and retirees.
